Botanical Name: Rosa centifolia, Rosa damascena

Rose is native to the Mediterranean area.

The different varieties of bushes grow to various heights and produce sweet, fragrant flowers.

Roses have been used throughout history for their appearance, scent, and therapeutic properties.

Oil was considered more precious and valuable then gold.

Ayurvedic practitioners used rose petals for skin wounds, inflammations, and as a laxative.

The Romans greatly favoured the rose and introduced its use to all the people they conquered.

The Persians were thought to have originated the distillation of rose oil before the Christian era.

The fragrance symbolises the love and beauty that was offered to the kings and gods.

Cleopatra strewed red rose pedals to a height of 18 inches (45centimetres) when she first met Mark Anthony.

The Persians, Greeks, and Romans bathed their bodies in the rose fragrance and used the perfume lavishly during religious ceremonies, burials, and sacrifices.

Wines and drinks were fragranced with roses by the Persians, Romans, and British.

Arabic doctors were the first to use rose as a remedy in the form of a jam, while Arabian women used the rose as an ingredient in their eye cosmetics.

American Indians healed mouth sores, fever sores, and blisters with rose. A tea was made from flowers to strengthen the heart, soothe coughs and sore throats, and for stomach and liver disorders.
